Ready, set, code!

This computer programming camp immerses campers in Java™, the popular programming software used on billions of devices worldwide! Campers learn about the logic, planning, and calculations that go into building Java™ programs, in addition to sharpening skills in planning, problem solving, and of course… computer programming!

While working on one “small” project and one “large” project throughout the week, campers have the opportunity to express themselves creatively and learn how to code from the backend.

So, what are the HOT NEW PROJECTS FOR 2018 at camp?

Some coding projects include →  A Code Writing App, A Code Breaking App, A Silly Name Generator,  Super Pong, Choose Your Own Adventure Game with graphics and dialogue, A Homework Helper, A Fortune Telling Genie App, A Scratch Crafting Reference Guide for Minecraft™, and lots More!  Also, add graphical programming for beautifully stylized projects!

By using Eclipse as a Java™ IDE, campers learn how to print text onto the computer screen, use conditional statements and loops, and get input from the user. Using these newly acquired skills, campers create a text based action adventure game and other projects. Campers can also express their creativity in making an ASCII art based game using the creation of custom methods. As campers progress, they essentially “take a step up” and explore the world of Graphics in Java™, which provides wonderful added features to camper projects. By utilizing the AWT graphics library, campers code fully functional graphics into their applications and can make choices as the programmer and project designer!

Valuable Learning Opportunities:

Endless Opportunities: Development opportunities with Java™ are endless. Java™ has a very large database with support from professional coders and developers throughout the world. Lots of software being used today involves Java™, partly or entirely. So, you will never run out of choices or worry about what to do with your Java™ skills once you start learning it.

Java™ has Longevity: What comes with its long history is a large database of tool sets and customization across many popular platforms. The Java™ knowledge base is vast and many questions that arise about Java™ can be answered.

Developing a Mind for Programming: A mastery in Java™ requires lots of patience and self-discipline. As you learn how to code in Java™ at camp, you learn to adjust yourself to the mindset of professional programmers and thinkers.

Leading by Example:  Java™ incorporates best practices in using object oriented programming. As you code in Java™, you gain skills in this area which are transferable to other programming languages like Python and C++!

Java™ is Universal and Cross-Platform: Java™ is running just about everywhere you can imagine. It’s how many large applications are programmed due to its scalability, stability, and maintainability. Examples of such applications include Minecraft™, Blu-ray technology and Gmail. By learning Java™ at camp, it will give you a greater understanding of other technology around you. Java™ is also cross-platform which means it will work on Mac, PC, and Linux as long as Java™ is installed.

Code Text to Speech Features in Projects:  Add another cool dimension to your programs by including Text to Speech technology!

Create The Next ______:  By learning Java™, you can create the next great thing in technology!

*No prior programming experience is required, but previous background in Scratch or another programming language and a basic understanding of Algebra is encouraged.

Campers will program using pre-installed software on Lavner computers. Campers are shown how to install Eclipse and continue their coding projects at home.

By the end of the session, campers improve their skills in Java™ and gain a better understanding of computer languages as a whole and leave camp with impressive projects!

Learning Java™ gives our campers a leg up in the tech world and a better understanding of how many programs work from the backend.

All campers receive a Lavner Camps t-shirt and a copy of their projects!

Please have your child bring a USB drive to camp on Friday to copy all project files.

*For campers interested in Introduction to Programming with Java™ Camp, we also recommend our Computer Programming Camp with Python™, Elite Skills Minecraft Camp with Java™ Coding, Web Design Camp, 3D Printing Camp, Virtual Reality Game Design Camp, and TECH R3VOLUTION™.
