Sports Analytics Camp

Ages 11-14

Camp Locations

2019 Sports Analytics Camp in Philadelphia PA, Main Line PA, Lower Gwynedd PA, West Chester PA, Cherry Hill NJ, Wilmington DE, and NYC – Manhattan!

Be Your Own GM.  Learn Advanced Stats.  Dominate Fantasy Sports.

Which player should be drafted in the first round?
How much does home-field advantage really matter?
Is it worth going for a touchdown on fourth and goal?
Why are so many teams shooting more 3-pointers than ever before, and does being at the top of the Steals category actually mean you are one of the best defenders?

In sports, there was a time when coaching, management, and decision-making came down to instinct and tradition. Over the last 20 years, statistical analysis and numbers-based reasoning has taken over sports. This is YOUR chance to learn skills in sports analytics, become a truly knowledgeable sports fan, improve your skills in fantasy sports, and maybe launch a career in the world of sports one day!

At Sports Analytics Camp, you will learn how to make decisions based on statistics to organize a team and evaluate players. In addition, you will learn how to use the power of computer coding to create a Java™ program that assigns a Player Efficiency Rating (PER) based on your model. And yes, you can decide how to weight each statistical category based on research and the use of sports analytics! Prior experience in Java™ or Python™ is recommended, but not required.

In addition to learning how to analyze stats and make theories and assertions, campers will participate in an All-Camp Fantasy Baseball League to put their skills to work!

3 Major Projects:

Analytics For Your Favorite Sports Team: Pick your favorite sports team or player and analyze how they can improve. Which statistics matter and which just look good? In which areas can your team get better? It’s up to you to analyze and decide… what statistical insights would you give to your favorite sports team that perhaps they are not even trying?

All Camp Fantasy Baseball League: Build your fantasy baseball team, see how your predictions pan out, and adjust your model for the next game! What stat matters to you and how will you make your team?

Code a Powerful PER Program For Maximum Efficiency Using Java™: Use Java™ to write an application that will calculate your very own player efficiency rating based on the stats that you choose! You control everything from which statistics matter, to how heavily they are weighted. Try it out for your fantasy team! At the end of the week, you even get to take it home!

Valuable Learning Opportunities

Explore An Expanding Industry

Sports analytics has exploded over the last few decades and there are tons of unexplored opportunities! Get a head start in this industry… and maybe make it a career!

Make An Impact

Design your very own player efficiency model using Java™. Models are constantly expanding and improving. Can you be more accurate than the current experts? YOU will take your Java™ project home at the end of the week.

Have Fun With Other Sports Enthusiasts

Love sports? So do we! Have fun with other campers who love sports as much as you do.

Be YOUR Own GM

Build the best team you can and have even more fun watching games at home and rooting for your players!

Take Home Your PER Model

Playing fantasy football this fall? You can design a PER Java™ program for use in your Fall Fantasy League!

Please note: Campers will compete in at least one fantasy baseball competition and will take home a Java™ application that will evaluate players.

One-on-one private instruction is an excellent way for our campers to learn at their own pace, gain a better understanding and mastery of the skills and subject material, and enhance your child’s experience at camp. Our instructors are friendly and supportive and they understand that every camper learns at his or her own pace. Our private lessons are designed to be hands-on and very focused, which enables the instructor and camper to concentrate on improving both strengths and weaknesses. Lessons are tailored to the specific camper, and in some instances, campers may use the private lessons to go above and beyond the camp curriculum in an educational and informative manner with the help of the instructor. Private lessons are optional, and are within the subject matter of the camp your child is attending that week.

Don’t miss out on reserving a private lesson, as they are limited and are booked on a first-come, first-serve basis! Campers have the option to purchase more than one private lesson per week, and each lesson builds upon the progress made at camp and in previous lessons.

In addition to being a great supplement to the camp week, private lessons are convenient! Lessons occur at the camper’s location either before camp (during Early Arrival) or after camp (during Extended Day).

Private lessons can be booked during online registration, or by contacting our office via email at [email protected]. If you already registered online and want to add lessons, you can log back into your account and add them to your camp registration.

*The purchase of private lessons is considered camp tuition and falls under the terms & conditions provided on www.lavnercamps.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our camp families ask us many great questions about our summer camps.  Below are a list of 10 questions that are frequently asked.  If you have a question that is not listed, please send it our way!

Question #1:  Are your camps accredited?

Answer:  Yes, we are accredited by the American Camp Association in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and carry our practices to other states. The American Camp Association provides a guideline of hundreds of standards, and conducts site visits for re-accreditation. While it is a lot of work to become and remain accredited, our commitment shows the dedication that we have to providing a safe and healthy environment for our campers, and our overall commitment to excellence and your child!

Question #2:  What are your staff to camper ratios?

Answer:  Typically our ratios are 1 staff member to 8 campers…or better! We invest in great staff and low ratios to ensure the best camp experience for your child, which is what counts the most!

Question #3:  Who are your instructors?

Answer:  Our instructors are high level and are the very best out of a large pool of qualified applicants we consider. Each year, we hire less than 8% of applicants. Typically, our lead instructors consist of teachers, college professors, undergrad/grad students from excellent colleges/universities, and the occasional superstar student entering college in the fall. Assistant instructors typically consist of accomplished rising seniors. Our instructors are knowledgeable in the subject area, passionate about working with kids, highly responsible, and have cleared background checks. Instructors go through a rigorous orientation and training prior to the summer camp season and have constant support from onsite camp directors and our central office. We put them in a position to succeed…and they do!

Question #4:  Do you have an on-site camp director?

Answer:  Yes! Many of our on-site directors are full-time teachers during the school year. Our on-site camp directors manage each camp location. They are trained to make sure that daily operations at camp are running smoothly, and are also CPR and First Aid certified. Camp directors are available on site to answer your questions, and are available by phone and email if you need to communicate with them during the day. Our central office also employs regional directors who visit camp locations to help ensure a high quality camp environment!

Question #5:  Do campers usually attend for one week or more than one week?

Answer:  Camper attendance varies.  Most campers attend for multiple weeks, either in the same camp or in a variety of camps.  All of our camps have multiple levels of curriculum and lots of additional activities and projects for all skill levels.

Question #6:  How do you group the campers at camp?

Answer:  Campers are grouped by age and ability. We run multiple levels of curriculum in each camp, allowing for campers to attend camp with us at any time during the summer, even if they are beginners. Our campers can sign up for any week and be placed appropriately in camp. This provides our camp families with maximum flexibility.

Question #7:  Do your campers improve at camp?

Answer:  Yes! Campers receive approximately 22.5-25 hours of concentrated time in their camp activity per week. This, combined with our cutting-edge curriculum and high level instructors, allows our campers to improve a lot! Camper improvement is the cornerstone of our Specialty Camps and is what allows us to be successful!

Question #8:  How do you keep camp fun?

Answer:  We hire fun and dynamic instructors, and focus on creating an awesome camp culture! Campers are also attending a specialty camp of their choice, so they already want to be there! We incorporate a number of breaks during the day with opportunities for recreation and socialization. On Fridays, there is typically a grand finale/showcase that campers work towards – e.g. Bake Off, ROBOWARS Tournament, Tennis Olympics, Fashion Show, Beta Testing Projects.  We receive tons of emails from happy parents…our campers truly love camp!

Question #9:  How do you create a safe camp environment?

Answer:  Camp safety is our #1 goal.  We work hard all year long to make sure our camp safety is top notch. We are ACA accredited and follow extensive guidelines. We hire very responsible staff and train them (including a test of our detailed handbook/procedure guide), employ procedures that promote safety and supervision, and are in constant communication. We also implement a behavioral policy that is strict but fair, and requires that all campers exude good behavior, do not engage in bullying, and contribute to a safe and welcoming camp environment. Your child is our #1 priority, which means that the safety of our campers is our top priority.
