Roller Coaster Design Camp Description:

Ages 6 to 10 – Space is Limited, Register Now!

Are you fascinated by roller coasters? Have you ever wondered what it takes to build a roller coaster? Join us for Roller Coaster Design Camp to learn about and create your own model-sized roller coasters!

Using K’NEX roller coaster kits, roller coaster simulators, and Minecraft™, build incredible, model-sized roller coasters and digitally design roller coaster simulations on PCs.  In addition to improving skills in design, building, and creativity, campers also learn about gravity, mass, inertia, velocity, centripetal acceleration, speed, kinetic and potential energy, compressed air systems, and much more!

Working in teams, campers use K’NEX to build two to three motorized roller coasters each week. Campers work with interlocking plastic rods, connectors, blocks, gears, wheels, and other components, which can be pieced together to form a wide variety of models, machines, and architectural structures – K’NEX roller coasters take hundreds of pieces to build – making it a truly epic experience. Campers can build with instructions and/or use their skills to add modifications to their roller coasters.  Campers will also have access to the K’NEX Ride It! App which will allow them to ride their roller coasters virtually in 2D mode.

Using Minecraft™ and roller coaster simulations as learning tools, campers utilize various skills to create and customize their own virtual roller coasters. Videos will be shown throughout the week to help campers understand exactly how roller coasters work and to conceptualize various concepts in physics.

On Friday afternoon, each team gives a demonstration of their final roller coaster design and the entire camp hosts an amusement park experience.  Limited admission!

Valuable Learning Opportunities:

Hands-on Building: Campers use K’NEX to build two to three awesome roller coasters while working with motors and incorporating their knowledge of physics concepts.  K’NEX roller coasters take hundreds of pieces to build, which allows for plenty of building time and fun.

Teamwork and Collaboration: Campers work in teams to build roller coasters with K’NEX.

Learning Basic Physics: Understanding how a roller coaster works is a key component to building an actual roller coaster. Campers learn the fundamentals of roller coaster physics to enhance their educational experience.

Improve Design Skills: Using Minecraft and roller coaster simulations, campers learn the importance of creating a well thought-up and efficient roller coaster.

Beta Testing:  Once roller coasters are built, they must be tested for safety and functionality.  Campers will text each roller coaster, and fix any design flaws along the way to get it approved for public use.

Have Fun:  Roller Coaster design is a super fun way to use your creativity, enhance your building skills, collaborate in a team environment, and learn about physics.
